9. Seeing things Roger's way: domestic scenes

From Donkerstraat, turn into Tuinwijk, a typical post-war housing estate that bears witness to how the village of Machelen evolved in the 1960s during Raveel's lifetime.

Daily life unfolds in the front gardens and behind the windows, as it did for Raveel. The simplicity of everyday life is his greatest source of inspiration. The bicycle leaning against the wall, the cat in the garden, the stove with the teapot: Raveel observes and paints “small” life, revealing the microcosm that is every village. In many of his works, Raveel lets us look out through the window over his shoulder; he paints “the act of looking”, as it were. This connection between inside and outside, a painting within a painting, gives his works a special power.
